AI assistants cite Google Business Profile reviews directly: DAC documented AI Overviews quoting individual reviews in October 2025, Google says AI Mode draws on the Knowledge Graph and Google Maps, and Ask Maps answers from reviews. An owner reply is published under the review and becomes part of what the assistant reads. 89% of consumers expect a reply and 81% expect it within a week, yet multi-location brands answer only 46.9% of their Google reviews.
We noticed it during a routine check. Asked for "a garage near the station that is open on Saturday", an assistant named one of our client's locations and added, in its own words, that it "closes early on Saturdays according to customers". The source was a two-star review from March: "closed at four even though it says six online". The location had fixed its hours in April. Nobody had replied to the review. So the model had two facts — a profile that said six and a customer who said four — and it did what a careful person would do with a contradiction: it reported the complaint.
The assistant does not know your opening hours are fixed now. It knows a customer said they were wrong, and that nobody disagreed. What we tell every client on day one
What the assistants actually read
This is documented, not speculated. In October 2025 DAC recorded Google AI Overviews pulling individual Business Profile reviews into summaries for branded queries. Google's own description of AI Mode says it draws on "our Knowledge Graph and Google Maps". Ask Maps, the Gemini feature that replaced public Q&A in 2026, answers "based on business responses and reviews". And since July 2026 ChatGPT shows Yelp reviews and ratings in local answers under a licensing deal — Yelp's CEO put it as "if you want to answer local queries, you really need Yelp". Reviews are not a side channel for these systems. They are the corpus.
Signals that help
- An owner reply that states the corrected fact plainly — hours, phone, address. Google publishes it under the review, and the reviewer is notified and can change their review.
- Consistent facts across the profile, the website and the replies, because Gemini is grounded in Maps and checks nothing else first.
- Volume and recency — Google's ranking page says more reviews and positive ratings can improve local ranking.
Signals that hurt
- A negative review with no reply: the complaint is the only specific statement on record.
- A profile whose hours differ from the website's — two sources, and the review becomes the tie-breaker.
- A defensive reply that argues instead of stating the fact. The model quotes the fact it can find; it does not award points for tone.
The numbers on replies
Consumers who expect business owners to respond to reviews (BrightLocal, Feb 2026).
19% expect a same-day reply — up from 6% a year earlier.
Share of Google reviews multi-location brands reply to (SOCi, 2026).
Two more figures explain why "reply to everything" is not the same as "reply with anything". Half of consumers say generic or templated replies put them off. And 82% now read AI-generated review summaries, with 23% willing to decide on those alone — so the summary of your reviews is read more often than the reviews. What goes into the summary is the review text plus whatever you added under it.
The fix is boring, and that is the good news
Every negative review gets a reply within a day — with the fact in it
- Draft in the reviewer's language, in the brand's tone, grounded in the profile only. Never a promise that is not in the record — the Air Canada ruling of February 2024 made a company liable for what its chatbot invented, and a review reply is just as public.
- State the correction when there is one: "Our Saturday hours are 08:00–18:00 and the profile shows that now." One fact, one sentence.
- A person approves below gear 3; in gear 3 the agent publishes above the confidence threshold you set. Reviews that name an employee, threaten legal action or touch on safety are handed to a person by the Policy Guard in every gear.
The window in which the reply still shapes what gets quoted.
One plain correction beats three paragraphs of apology.
Doing it at two hundred locations
SOCi's long-run data puts a typical location at about 5.8 new Google reviews a month. Across 200 locations that is roughly 1,160 reviews a month, or forty a working day, in whatever languages the customers write. The average response time SOCi measured for multi-location brands was six days; the brands with the highest visibility answered 80.5% of reviews in 2.1 days.
Where the agent helps
The Review Agent drafts every reply within minutes of the review appearing, in the reviewer's language, with the location's facts attached. A regional manager approves a morning's batch in the time it used to take to write two replies. The best evidence on this kind of assistance — a study of 5,179 support agents — found productivity up 14% on average and 34% for the least experienced staff. The gain is not speed at the top. It is that the weakest location's replies read like the strongest location's.
How to measure whether it worked
The SEO · GEO · LLM Agent asks the same local queries every week — "category near me", "open on Saturday", "how do I book" — against ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and records whether the location is named and what is cited. When a review reply replaces the review as the cited source, that shows up as a line in the logbook. It is slow, it is not a ranking, and it is the only measure that maps to what customers actually see.
Questions we get on this
Do AI assistants really quote Google reviews?
Yes. DAC documented Google AI Overviews citing individual Business Profile reviews in October 2025; Google states that AI Mode uses the Knowledge Graph and Google Maps; Ask Maps answers are based on business responses and reviews; and ChatGPT has shown Yelp reviews in local answers since July 2026. Reviews and owner replies are part of what these systems read.
How fast should a business reply to a Google review?
Within a week at the latest and ideally within a day. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 89% of consumers expect a reply, 81% expect it within a week and 19% expect it the same day. SOCi measured an average response time of six days for multi-location brands, while the most visible brands answered in about two days.
Does replying to a review change what the reviewer wrote?
Not automatically, but it can. Google publishes an approved reply under the review, shows it as coming from the business without the responder's name, and notifies the reviewer, who can then edit their review. Replies are moderated and usually appear within minutes, occasionally after a longer review.
Should AI write my review replies?
AI can draft them well: in BrightLocal's blind tests a majority of consumers preferred the AI-written reply, but 46% would be suspicious of text that looks AI-written and 50% are put off by generic replies. Use AI for drafts grounded in the location's facts and brand voice, and keep a person approving until the drafts are consistently accepted without edits.
What should a reply to a review with wrong facts contain?
One clear correction stated as fact, in the reviewer's language: the current hours, phone number or policy, and where it is shown. Avoid arguing with the reviewer, avoid promises that are not in your records, and do not name employees. The correction is what AI assistants will quote next to the review.
